Joy was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in June 2024 at the young age of 33. Since then, she has undergone chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and a reconstruction surgery. Joy has been cancer-free since January 2026. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJoy is a survivor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThrough genetic testing, Joy learned that she has the BRCA1 gene mutation, and strongly encouraged me to get tested as well. I was certain my test would come back negative, but to my surprise, I discovered that I also carry the BRCA1 gene mutation. An inherited mutation in the BRCA1 gene increases the risk of breast, ovarian and several other cancers - in both women and men.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy genetic counselor talked to me about my options - increased screenings or preventative surgeries. The amount of information was overwhelming and after months of research and doctor consultations, I decided that a prophylactic hysterectomy and double mastectomy was the right choice for me. Learning about my BRCA1 mutation gave me the opportunity to make informed decisions about my health, which I am very grateful for.
