PreciousMAHJ is the mahjong line from Precious Lace Jewelry — American mahjong tiles, mats, racks and cases designed the way we design fine jewelry, and made in limited editions.

Every set begins the same way a ring does: with a gemstone. The Dots become round stones, the Soap an emerald-cut amethyst in gold claw prongs, the Bams green baguettes. It is mahjong drawn with a jewelry designer's eye.

The collections

  • Mahjong tiles — 160 acrylic tiles per set, released in numbered limited editions. Jewel No. 1 Amethyst is the inaugural release.
  • Mahjong mats — 33" × 33", 3mm premium neoprene with a smooth polyester top, carrying hand-painted gemstone artwork by Ukrainian artist Tetiana Samoilenko.
  • Mahjong racks — 20-inch lightweight acrylic racks in Gold and Amethyst Radiance pearlescent finishes, with a magnetic pusher design that keeps tiles aligned.
  • The Jewel Case — amethyst microfiber inside and out, polished gold hardware, four removable logo-debossed trays, sized for a complete American mahjong set.

Is this an American mahjong set?

Yes. PreciousMAHJ tiles are American mahjong sets, and The Jewel Case is built to hold a complete American set.

How many tiles come in a set?

160 tiles. The suits are drawn as gemstones — round stones for the Dots, an emerald-cut amethyst Soap set in gold claw prongs, green baguettes for the Bams — with the Winds as rings and the Flowers blooming alongside scattered diamonds.

What are the tiles made from?

Acrylic, cut and finished to jewelry tolerances rather than game-piece tolerances. The racks are acrylic too, chosen so they stay light enough to move around a table all evening.

Do the mats work with other tile sets?

The mats are a 33" × 33" playing surface, so they suit a standard American mahjong setup rather than only our own tiles. The racks are designed to pair with a variety of tile styles.

Are the editions really limited?

Each design is produced in controlled quantities and released as a numbered edition. Once an edition sells through, we move on to the next one.

Why a jeweler makes mahjong tiles

Because the two crafts turn out to ask the same question: how do you make something a person will handle thousands of times and still want to look at? A tile gets picked up, turned over, pushed across a table and set down again all night. So does a ring, in its way.
