PreciousMAHJ is the mahjong line from Precious Lace Jewelry — American mahjong tiles, mats, racks and cases designed the way we design fine jewelry, and made in limited editions.

Every set begins the same way our custom rings do: with a gemstone. The Dots become round stones, the Soap an emerald-cut gem in gold claw prongs, the Bams green baguettes. It is mahjong drawn with a jewelry designer's eye.

The collections

  • Mahjong tiles — 160 acrylic tiles per set, released in limited editions. 
  • Mahjong mats — 33" × 33", 3mm premium neoprene with a smooth polyester top, carrying hand-painted gemstone artwork by Ukrainian artist Tetiana Samoilenko.
  • Mahjong racks — 20-inch acrylic racks in our Radiance™ pearlescent finishes, with a magnetic pusher design that keeps tiles aligned.
  • The Jewel Case — asoft microfiber inside and out, polished gold hardware, four removable logo-debossed trays, sized for a complete American mahjong set.

Yes. PreciousMAHJ tiles are American mahjong sets, and The Jewel Case is built to hold a complete American set.

How many tiles come in a set?

160 tiles come in a set:

  • 1-9 Dots (4 of each) = 36
  • 1-9 Bams (4 of each) = 36
  • 1-9 Cracks =36
  • White Dragon (Soap) for the Dots = 4
  • Green Dragon for Bams = 4
  • Red Dragon for Cracks = 4
  • Winds (North, East, West and South) = 16
  • Flowers = 8
  • Jokers = 10
  • Blanks = 6

What are the tiles made from?

Both our tiles and racks are made from acrylic.

Are the editions really limited?

Each design will be manufactured in small batches, with potential one or two restocks per design/colorway.

Jewelry design and Mahjong tile artwork ask the same question: how do you create something a person will handle thousands of times and still want to look at it over and over again? A tile gets picked up, turned over, pushed across a table and set down again and again. So does a piece of jewelry, in its way. The answer in both cases is the same — it's all about the colors, the materials and the uniqueness of the art.

The path to mahjong began the way most of my pieces do—with images and ideas I couldn't stop thinking about. I found myself looking at tile faces and seeing the same forms I work with every day: the cuts and shapes of gemstone, the geometry of different types of jewelry pieces, the way light breaks across an engraved surface. Mahjong is hours spent looking at the tiles—shuffling, arranging, studying them across a table—and I wanted the artwork to be worth all that looking. So I designed each face the way I design a piece of jewelry, drawing every character, suit, and flower with gemstone forms rendered in their proper cuts and color chosen the way I'd choose a stone. Engraved into the tile and painted, each design holds light and shadow in its carving the way an engraved band does. What emerged was PreciousMAHJ—a set where the art on the tile carries the same intention as anything I'd make to be worn.
